Just a quick entry today, but some fun songs.
Big Black, "Seth"
An early song from Big Black, this was on the EP Bulldozer, the first one that featured Santiago Durango and so is really the first real recording from them. This song was later found on The Hammer Party, which collected the first couple (or three, on CD) EPs. It's an interesting document of a band that is kind of finding their sound, and there are some strong songs on the collection.
Harvey & The Phenomenals, "Soul and Sunshine"
My god, listen to how filthy this groove is. It's no wonder this has been sampled a billion times. This comes to us courtesy of the Product Placement Breaks compilation, which really can be a delight.
Voodoo Glow Skulls, "Yo No Tengo Tiempp (Para Ti)"
A blistering hardcore song here from Voodoo Glow Skulls. I'm always happy when my more extreme music is in a language I don't understand. It means I'm not distracted trying to work out any meaning in the lyrics.
Murs, "Break Up (The OJ Song)"
Murs here with a personal song about a bad break up - I don't know how autobiographical this song is, but the conflict at the heart of the lyrics makes for an interesting song.
Obits, "Malpractice"
From the final Obits album, this song gives a good taste of how much Rick Froberg has dialed down the howling of some of his earlier work but still retained some of the edge.
