Here Lies Man, "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere"
Like some kind of fuzzed out combination of stoner rock and Afro beat, Here Lies Man is another one of those Bandcamp discoveries that come from checking out their daily blog. It's pretty fun stuff!
De La Soul, "Pain"
From one end of De La Soul's career to the other, this comes from their most recent album, And the Anonymous Nobody. As I mentioned in the first entry on them, this album was produced using Kickstarter, and all the samples came from their own recording sessions. I'm curious to see what their followup will be like. Will they use the same methods to make their next record?
Cherry Poppin' Daddies, "Dr. Bones"
In parallel with the ska revival of the 90s, there was interest in some other older forms of music, most of which also involved horns. Swing, in particular, had a mini moment in the sun, with bands like the Cherry Poppin' Daddies getting attention. Zoot Suit Riot, a compilation of their swing songs across several albums along with some new tracks, was hastily rushed out the door. There are actually a bunch of songs on the album that I like a lot, even if it was a cynical cash in. Part of my affection here is based on seeing the band live a fair bit, though, so keep that in mind.
Black Happy, "Hitting the Floor"
I swear, this stupid shuffle gets in moods. Apparently it wants horns right now? Anyway, another track from Black Happy, again from the last compilation album.
The Dead C, "Scarey Nest"
Part of a New Zealand scene in the late 80s/early 90s that included other bands on Flying Nun records, the Dead C were a noisy experimental band that I never really got far into. I've only got this one record, Eusa Kills, and never really followed them further. They put out a ton of stuff, and I can't really tell you much about it.
